Leaders in Da Nang Request Early Retirement to Make Way for Younger Staff

As reported by PLO, several department leaders in Da Nang have submitted requests for early retirement, including Director of the Department of Finance, Nguyen Van Phung, Director of the Department of Information and Communications, Nguyen Quang Thanh, and Deputy Director of the Department of Transport, Nguyen Trung Nghia.

In an interview on February 11, Mr. Nguyen Van Phung (born in 1964) confirmed that he had sent his request to his superiors despite having around 15 months left until his official retirement age.

According to Mr. Phung, his decision to retire early is aimed at facilitating the organization and restructuring of the city’s administration.

“As a member of the City Party Committee, I feel it is my responsibility to set an example and pave the way for younger officials to step up and contribute. I approached the writing of my retirement request with a positive mindset, focusing on the greater good. Under Government Decree 178/2024, I will receive some financial support, but I haven’t yet determined the amount, as my intention was not to consider that when submitting my request,” Mr. Phung shared.

Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Trung Nghia (born in 1965) mentioned that he is nearing 60 years old, with the legal retirement age being over 61.

Mr. Nghia explained that his early retirement request is motivated by the need for organizational restructuring and to streamline staffing in accordance with the central government’s directives.

He also expressed his desire to allow younger officials the opportunity to advance and establish their own positions. When writing his request, he felt completely at ease and voluntary, wanting to make room for younger talents to excel.

Regarding Government Decree 178/2024, Mr. Nghia stated that he has not thoroughly studied the decree and has not yet calculated his potential financial support. He acknowledges there will be some monetary assistance, but he did not focus on that aspect when submitting his retirement request.

In a discussion with the press, Mr. Nguyen Quang Thanh echoed similar sentiments, stating that his request for retirement is intended to aid in the organization and restructuring efforts, thereby creating opportunities for younger staff. This is particularly relevant as the Department of Information and Communications is set to merge with the Department of Science and Technology, with portions integrating into the Department of Culture and Sports.

Additionally, the organizational restructuring plan in Da Nang will also see the merging of the Department of Transport with the Department of Construction, and the Department of Finance with the Department of Planning and Investment.
