A recent report indicates that the U.S. Agency for International Development, commonly referred to as USAID, has closed its headquarters to staff as of Monday, following actions taken by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is currently under the leadership of Elon Musk.
An email was disseminated to agency personnel, stating that this decision was made by “Agency leadership.” The communication instructed staff to direct any responses to an email associated with Gavin Kliger, who is the special adviser to the director of the Office of Personnel Management and also affiliated with DOGE, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
On Monday morning, Musk announced that President Donald Trump had “agreed” to the closure of USAID, which allocates billions of dollars in purported humanitarian, development, and security aid to more than 100 nations.
“None of this could have been accomplished without the President’s full support. Regarding the USAID situation, I discussed it with him in detail, and he concurred that we should proceed with the closure,” Musk stated during an X Spaces discussion.
“I even confirmed with him multiple times, asking, ‘Are you certain?’ and he responded affirmatively,” the owner of the social media platform X added. “Thus, we are in the process of shutting it down.”
Musk further elaborated during the discussion, which included former DOGE co-leader Vivek Ramaswamy and Iowa Republican Senator Joni Ernst, that there was virtually no possibility of reforming or enhancing USAID, leading to the decision to terminate its operations.
“To clarify, the rationale behind shutting down USAID, rather than merely undertaking minor adjustments, is that our investigation revealed not just a single flawed element, but rather a pervasive issue,” Musk explained, as reported by The Hill.
Agency staff disclosed to the Associated Press that over 600 employees were denied access to the system overnight. Those who were still able to log in had received the previously mentioned email notification. Musk and his team at DOGE have been striving to take control of USAID to access the agency’s classified documents, which encompass various intelligence reports.
“Over the weekend, we put USAID through the wood chipper. We could have attended some excellent parties, but we chose to do this instead,” Musk remarked during an X Spaces discussion on Monday morning. Earlier that Sunday, Musk stated, “USAID is a criminal organization. It is time for it to be dismantled.” President Donald Trump also expressed critical views about USAID in remarks made to reporters on Sunday evening.
“It has been managed by a group of radical extremists. We are in the process of removing them,” Trump informed members of the press.
